Teri Haynes had an appointment with me to discuss a joint presentation. She's a speaker/trainer too, and speacializes in etiquette challenges in the business world. (
www.BusinessInteractions.net) It was five minutes before the hour of our appointment when my phone alerted me to a call from Teri. "Jerry, I'm running a little behind and will be five minutes late. Is that OK with you?" I said "Sure", and thanked her for letting me know.
With my extra five minutes, I began remembering the seemingly scores of people who arrived late for an appointment or never arrived at all. I remembered my thoughts when they didn't arrive or communicate...
They don't care.
I'm losing valuable time.
When will they get here?
What should I do?
Should I start another project or make an important call?
Are they hurt or sick?
Should I call them?
I need to re-prioritize my day.
Teri negated all of those thoughts and demonstrated her respect for me and her appointment with a quick and inexpensive, less than a minute, cell phone call. Teri knew it was a call that needed to be placed and needed to be placed NOW. I don't know if you've noticed. Today, your clients want what they want and they want it now.
